Epigraphy: Literacy and Identity in a Pastoral Landscape

This research engages in a linguistic study of the hundreds of Safaitic inscriptions documented during the several survey seasons of the project. The term Safaitic refers to the script used to carve thousands of inscriptions located in the harra, the basaltic desert stretching from southern Syria through northern Jordan to northern Saudi Arabia. The language of the inscriptions can be defined as a continuum of Old Arabic dialects.
